Gurudongmar Lake (5,430 m) in North Sikkim is one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world and among the holiest sites for Sikhs, Buddhists, and Hindus alike. Located 65 km north of Lachen near the China border, its turquoise waters remain partially unfrozen even in winter — a phenomenon local tradition attributes to a blessing by Guru Nanak Dev Ji during his Himalayan travel in the 15th century.

A Glimpse into the History of Gurudongmar Lake
Guru Nanak's Visit (15th Century)
According to Sikh tradition, Guru Nanak Dev Ji passed through this region during his Himalayan travels (Udasi). When local herders appealed to him about the frozen lake preventing their access to water, the Guru touched a section of the lake — which has reportedly remained unfrozen at that spot ever since, even when surrounding water is solid ice.
Buddhist Sacred Geography
In Tibetan Buddhist tradition, Gurudongmar is associated with Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche), who is believed to have meditated in the lake's surroundings. The area sits on ancient trans-Himalayan pilgrimage routes connecting Sikkim to Tibet, and Lachen's Buddhist community considers the lake a sacred power spot (beyul).
Military & Modern Access
Gurudongmar lies in a sensitive military zone adjacent to the China border and was sealed to civilians until the 1990s. The Indian Army maintains an outpost at the lake. Access was gradually opened for permitted Indian nationals in phases, with a small Sikh shrine established by the Army on the eastern shore in the 2000s.
Significance of Gurudongmar Lake
Gurudongmar is simultaneously sacred to three religions — Sikhism (Guru Nanak's blessing), Buddhism (Guru Rinpoche's meditation ground), and Hinduism (associated with Lord Shiva as a sky-high teertha). Its altitude of 5,430 m makes it one of the 15 highest lakes on Earth. The "unfrozen corner" (the section touched by Guru Nanak) is the focal point of both Sikh pilgrimage and tourist photography at the lake.
Events at Gurudongmar Lake
Guru Nanak Jayanti Ardas
On Guru Nanak Jayanti (October–November), Sikh soldiers of the Indian Army stationed in North Sikkim perform a dawn Ardas (prayer service) at the lakeside Sikh shrine. Civilian Sikh pilgrims with permits make the arduous journey from Lachen to participate in this high-altitude observance.
Saga Dawa Offering
During Saga Dawa — the holiest month of the Tibetan Buddhist calendar — Lachen monks make an annual offering journey to the lake at dawn, performing lakeside prayers and setting prayer flags on the surrounding ridgelines. The ritual includes fire offerings and mantra recitations specific to the lake's protective deity.
Did You Know?
Gurudongmar Lake sits so high that the surrounding mountains and sky are reflected in the lake's glassy surface — photographers find that the horizon appears to wrap around them in 360° of mirrored blue. At 5,430 m, the air contains only 50% of the oxygen found at sea level; most visitors experience shortness of breath within minutes of stepping out of their vehicles. Time at the lake is strictly limited to 30–45 minutes by most tour operators for visitor safety.
